About the Check Ride Course

The Check Ride course builds on what is learned in the Learner Permit course. It assists riders in being safe on-road and prepares them for the Licence assessment. It is a compulsory step in the Licence process. It can be completed any time after being issued your Learner Permit, and must be completed at least 1 month before attempting the Licence assessment.

As the Check Ride must be completed at least 1 month before attempting the Licence assessment, it is recommended the Check Ride be completed no later than 13 months after being issued a Learner Permit.

The Check Ride is conducted both on the training range and on the road.

During the course, you will continue to develop your bike control and roadcraft skills. You will receive coaching and feedback on what you are doing well and any areas you need to work on. After successfully completing the course, you will be given a Check Ride record sheet listing areas to work on before attempting the Licence assessment. Bring this record sheet to your Licence assessment.

HART provides all motorcycles, helmets, gloves and jackets for the duration of the course if required.

Why choose HART?

At HART, we understand that learning to ride a motorcycle is challenging. The quality of the training you receive has a huge impact on how well you learn the skills needed. HART is confident that our trainers are the best in the industry. Your experience will provide you every opportunity to learn what is required to be a safe and competent rider. So confident are we in the excellence of our training, if you don’t complete it first time, your next attempt is free!

On the day

To get the most out of the course it is important to listen to the feedback given to yourself and the other riders. All efforts will be made to observe your riding and give you feedback on what you are doing well and what you can improve. HART has designed it routes to give a great mix of road and traffic situations. Due to traffic or weather conditions, the trainer may not be able to see you ride in all situations. With this in mind, by being involved in the discussions and listening to the feedback provided to other riders in the group you can maximise what you can get out of the course. This will best prepare you for the Licence assessment and also your ongoing riding enjoyment and safety.

For your own safety and the safety of others, the instructor may stop you from riding during the course. If you are stopped from riding, HART will give you a free 1 on 1 session with an instructor and we will book you into the course again free of charge.

Plan to arrive at HART at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. If you arrive after the course has started, you will not be allowed to join the course. Due to the nature of the training, HART is unable to catch you up or let you join a course that has already started. If possible, HART will endeavour to book you in to another course as soon as practicable. It is important that you arrive at least 20 minutes before your course start time to avoid disappointment.

You must bring with you:

  • Your current motorcycle learner permit.

What to wear:

You must wear full skin coverage clothing from the waist down, no shorts, three quarter pants, torn or ripped jeans. Dress for the weather conditions, remembering that you will be outside for most of the course. HART will loan you a motorcycle jacket to wear during the course:

  • You should wear jeans, or other full-length sturdy pants

If you are fortunate enough for it to be raining on the day of your course, it will still go ahead. HART will provide you with wet weather gear to use during the course.
