Course Details

HART is an accredited provider of the Transport for NSW (TfNSW) Pre-Learner Motorcycle Rider Training Course

Please Note:  This course is delivered in English.
There is an expectation that you are able to understand English at a basic level.  If this is not the case, please bring with you an interpreter who will be able to translate the course for you

The Pre-Learner Motorcycle Rider Training Course is designed for people with no previous motorcycle (manual or auto) riding experience and is held over 2 consecutive days, for 3.5 hours each day. A suitable motorcycle will be provided. A helmet and gloves are also provided if you do not have your own.

The Pre-Learner Rider Training course is a competency-based course, with strict pass/fail criteria. You’ll only be permitted to continue riding if you’ve passed all of the competencies and in order.

When you pass, you’ll be issued with a Certificate of Competence, which you’ll need to take with you when you attend Service NSW to do your Rider Knowledge Test.

Requirements
To get your learner licence, you need to be at least 16 years and 9 months old. You are able to attend the Pre-Learner Rider Training course at HART from 16 years, 6 months.

You don't need to hold a NSW driver licence to apply for a rider licence, but you do need a TfNSW Customer Number.  (Call TfNSW on 13 22 13 for more information)

The Certificate of Competence you receive when you successfully complete the course is valid for 3 months.

Cancelling or changing your booking
You can change your booking, provided you give at least five (5) days’ notice.  A 10% administration fee will apply. There are no refunds in the following situations:

  • Lateness in attending the course
  • Proof of identity issues
  • Delays caused by traffic or motor vehicle incidents
  • Bad weather conditions
  • Failure to attend your course or remedial lesson
  • Incorrect attire (long pants, long sleeves & closed in shoes required)

On the day
Riding a motorcycle requires a high level of balance, coordination and concentration and not everyone has these skills. If you can ride a bicycle and drive a manual car, you probably have the necessary basic skills. If you can’t, or it’s a long time since you did, you may require time to progress through the training.

For your own safety and the safety of others, the instructor may stop you from riding during the course. If you’re stopped from riding, the instructor will advise you of the best way to proceed with your training.

Plan to arrive at HART at least 20 minutes before the scheduled start time. If you arrive after the course has started, you will not be allowed to join the course. Course fees are not refundable in this situation.

You need to bring

  • Proof of your identity
  • You must wear full skin coverage clothing. No shorts, three-quarter pants, torn or ripped jeans, or short sleeved shirts will be allowed
  • You should wear jeans, or other full-length sturdy pants
  • Boots or sturdy shoes and your ankles must be covered
  • A sturdy long sleeved shirt or jacket. Consider the weather conditions, as a thick jacket may not be suitable on a hot summer day
  • A hat and sunglasses or eye protection
  • In the case of wet weather, please bring wet weather gear
